Thanks to everyone who answered me on twitter and other places about ideas for places to visit when the girls were visiting. We did SO much last week and we had a blast. Well, I did. I’m hoping they did too!
We spent lots of time at the new public pool. Our pool pump broke, so we couldn’t swim at home like we usually do to beat the heat. We had a great time in the water. They had giant water slides and the girls made friends.

We spent lots of time in the car, traveling to one place or another.

We went to the Natural History Museum on the KU Campus in Lawrence, KS. There, we saw lots of animal bones and educational stuff. We also got to see grasshoppers, which they found very exciting.

We visited Clinton Lake for more swimming while we were in Lawrence, where they got to see me get a $20 parking ticket. Did you know you have pay $15 to park in a Kansas State Park? Yeah, neither did I. But, the swimming was fun! Everyone enjoyed going to see the new Disney Pixar flick, UP.
Before giving them back to their parents, we took them to the Renaissance Festival in Jefferson City, that’s put on by the public library. It was incredibly hot and miserable out, but they still managed to have a great time.

I already miss them and can’t wait for their next visit!

It was SOOOO cold!

Dad and Keegen rode in the parade with Toys for Tots, that dad has been active in this year.

We got popcorn from Tolson’s and Paige was happy!

My brother-in-law (hi Rich!) told us about the Lost Room a *really* long time ago and, I’ll be honest, I wasn’t too excited about seeing it. So, I added it to our Netflix queue and let it sit there for about a year until it made its way to the top and was delivered to our home. Doug and I finally sat down to watch it last weekend and we both sat there, eyes glued to the screen, until it was over. This is a huge compliment because it’s hard to get my husband to sit in front of the television for any length of time. I don’t really want to elaborate too much on the plot of the Lost Room because I don’t want to ruin it for anyone. But WATCH IT! Watch it NOW! It’s spooky, engrossing, suspenseful, mind-blowing, and I wish there was more!!
The Lost Room is a science fiction television miniseries that aired on the Sci Fi Channel in the United States. The series revolves around the titular room and some of the hundred everyday items from that room that possess unusual powers. The show’s protagonist, Joe Miller, is searching for these objects to rescue his daughter, Anna, who has disappeared inside the Room. Once a typical room at a 1960s motel along U.S. Route 66, the Lost Room now exists outside of normal time and space.

While we were eating at Red Robin before attending the KC Irish Fest yesterday, Robin and I were both intrigued by the Nuclear Ice Tea on the drink menu. So, we grabbed all the ingredients on our way home and made them ourselves!

These are the ingredients. Wow!

This is the drink and, boy, is it ever yummy!!

YUM!!

After realizing that my old, awesome vacuum was going to cost a fortune to get repaired, Doug and I set about finding a replacement. I searched the internet and Consumer Reports (check your local library for website access!) for reviews and advice on shopping for one. There were others that were had better reviews, but after searching stores in a 50 mile radius of our home, this one was the winner! We chose the Bissell Lift Off Revolution Pet.

First, I don’t know why I waited so long to get a bagless vacuum- AMAZING! This thing gets every spec of pet dirt and hair- and trust me, we have a lot. The hose could be a little longer, but makes up for it with the turbo spinning brush attachment that I’ve used to clean all my furniture. Also, the canister in the center lifts out with the hose and becomes portable! If you have pet hair in your home, I just cannot recommend this thing enough!

A couple weeks ago, Doug and I took our nieces, Shayleigh and Adrian, to the zoo. I won’t post the hundred or so photos they took of animals while we were there (although I have promised to create a page on the internet with all their photos). Here are a few of the highlights!

On our way to the zoo! Fun day ahead- we were all excited. Being used to trips to the St. Louis zoo, the excitement died a bit when we got there and saw the outrageous prices for admission at the Kansas City Zoo.

Aspiring photographer, Adrian’s, favorite photo of the day- titled “Monkey Toes.” She was bursting with pride after she took this one!

The end of the day consisted of lots of riding…

The tram was awesome!! After walking around in the heat for six hours, we were all happy to sit down for a ride.

The train, on the other hand, was freaking scary! A bit terrified, we were also happy to not be walking.

… just sit on the veranda and drink mint juleps!

Mint Julep’s main ingredient… Bourbon! We won’t comment on the fact that this half gallon jug appears to be empty.

During our evening of Mint Juleps, with Robin and Mike, we also had kabobs. Yummers! We cooked them Good Eats style.

Sorry about my complete absence from the internet. I haven’t been reading blogs either. But I have a good excuse! I recently got promoted from part-time too full-time at my library! I have been working long hours, waiting for them to replace me in my old position, while still working my new position. Officially, I now work full-time day hours in Circulation (in our library that means you do reference and PCC as well) and I also do programming for school age and teen patrons. While I have had tons of experience working circulation, programming is an entirely new game for me. I don’t blog too much about work usually, but I might start mentioning it from time-to-time because it’s going to encompass a lot more of my time!

I am so freaking busy at work and I’m exhausted, so all you all get are photos (of niece and nephew) from the weekend. Enjoy!

Paige wasn’t too sure about that big slide at the park.

But she loved the swing!

Keegen had a BLAST at the park.

He finally tried the biggest slide for the first time and loved it!

Paige loves her green beans!

These kids passed out on opposite ends of the room and we didn’t want to disturb them, so we left them there instead of taking them to their beds. We came back a few minutes later and found them like this.

What is the nearest big city to your home?
Higginsville (we don’t actually live within the city limits)
Soup
On a scale of 1-10 with 10 being highest, how well do you keep secrets?
Probably about an 8. 10 if it’s something serious.
Salad
Describe your hair (color, texture, length).
This is exciting for me, because I recently had a drastic change. I went from the long, blonde hair I’ve had all my life to short, red hair! I haven’t decided if the red is going to stay though.
Main Course
What kind of driver are you? Courteous? Aggressive? Slow?
This really depends on my mood. One thing I know- I have road rage like no other!
Dessert
When was the last time you had a really bad week?
I’m pretty fortunate, and I don’t ever remember having an entire week of crappiness.

Sitting with Doug and Phil watching our bonfire late one night
Doug- “We’ve got some hot dog roasting utensils.”
Me- “They’re behind the microwave.”
Doug stares at me
Me- “What? I was cleaning behind the microwave and they had fallen back there. I just decided that was a good place to keep them.”
Doug stares at me
Me- “Well, I DID clean back there! Besides, we almost never use them!”
Doug shakes his head and laughs, “I love you.”
Me- *smile*

Yesterday was such a beautiful day. Before going to Costco (which totally rocked my world), we went to our pond to feed the fish. This is one of our favorite summer pastimes, and it was the first time we had a chance to do it this year.

Doug throwing fish food.

Connor had a good time at the pond and spent much of the time scouring the ground for bits of dropped fish food.

Shiloh was absolutely fascinated with the fish. They swam right under her nose and she just stood perfectly still and watched them.

When someone smiles at you, do you smile back?
Most often, yes. But there are times, when they get a look that says “Why is that crazy person smiling at me like that? I’m scared!”
Soup
Describe the flooring in your home. Do you have carpet, hardwood, vinyl, a mix?
Hardwood that *desperately* needs to be refinished, in most rooms. The kitchen and the bathroom have vinyl tile.
Salad
Write a sentence with only 5 words, but all of the words have to start with the first letter of your first name.
The tart took the train.
Main Course
Do you know anyone whose life has been touched by adoption?
Certainly! I have two cousins who were adopted, so I would say that everyone in our family was touched by adoption.
Dessert
Name 2 blue things.
Most of the decor in my bedroom is blue (the other color is white) and the origami that is hanging in our living room is blue!

I got a new phone! I love it! I was going to get an iPhone, but those prices were just a little out of our range. After doing a little research on Consumer Reports, my beloved CNET, and reading user reviews I settled on the Samsung Blackjack II. I haven’t used the email or Windows Mobile features yet, but so far I am very pleased with this phone.
